President Trump invites PM Modi to the US amid discussions on trade, security, and immigration
In a significant diplomatic move, United States President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the US next week. The invitation comes on the heels of a phone call between the two leaders on January 27, during which Trump emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the realms of trade, security, and immigration.
During their conversation, Trump discussed the necessity for India to purchase more American-made security equipment and reiterated the need for greater cooperation in addressing global security concerns. PM Modi, in turn, congratulated Trump on his second term in office, reaffirming India’s commitment to a mutually beneficial partnership and pledging cooperation for the welfare of their people and the promotion of global peace, prosperity, and security.
As the visit approaches, sources indicate that PM Modi is scheduled to meet with President Trump on February 13 in Washington, DC. Trump is expected to host a special dinner in honour of the Indian Prime Minister during the visit. Modi, who is expected to arrive in Washington DC on February 12 after concluding his trip to France, will stay in the US capital until February 14. The trip will also include engagements with American corporate leaders and the Indian diaspora community.

The US, which is India’s largest trading partner, saw trade between the two countries exceed $118 billion in 2023-24. Both nations are eager to expand economic ties, with the US aiming to reduce its trade deficit with India. In a move that may benefit US companies, India recently reduced customs duties on several key items.
On the immigration front, Trump raised concerns about illegal immigration and discussed how India could assist in addressing the issue. India has committed to repatriating Indians who have entered the US illegally, once they are identified. Furthermore, both countries are likely to explore enhanced cooperation on strategic issues, particularly in emerging technologies and military interoperability.
As the visit draws near, all eyes are on how these discussions will unfold, as the leaders look to strengthen their partnership and address some of the critical challenges facing both nations.
