In an unimaginable turn of events, a jet skier met a tragic end after being shot by his rescuer following a mishap on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. The incident unfolded in March 2022, involving jet skiers Hannah Ayers and Nathan Drew Morgan, who fell off their jet ski without life jackets.

The rescue took a sinister turn when John Dotson, an elderly individual on a pontoon boat, came to their aid. Morgan, however, reportedly assaulted Dotson and his wife Debra after being pulled onto the boat. The Oconee County Sheriff’s department reported that Morgan became agitated, expressing a desire to return to his jet ski.

Ayers attempted to deescalate the situation by pushing Morgan back into the water, but the assault persisted. The couple had to pull Morgan back onto their boat for a second time, leading to a fatal confrontation.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office stated, “After a second encounter, the man on the pontoon shot the man fearing for his and his wife’s life while being assaulted. The man who was shot died on the pontoon.”

Authorities arrived at the scene following reports of a shooting, and an autopsy confirmed that Morgan succumbed to a single gunshot wound to the chest. A subsequent court ruling deemed the incident an act of self-defence, absolving the shooter of charges.

Despite the lack of charges, tributes poured in for Morgan, with Ayers expressing her grief while acknowledging the need for self-defence. She stated, “Drew was my friend and I will mourn him as my friend. But I will never understand the way he was acting that day – it’s like a demon possessed his body.”

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the unpredictability of events, even during seemingly routine activities, and the necessity for self-defence measures in unforeseen circumstances.
