In 2013, tragedy struck during a Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas, where Mevoli endeavored to push the limits of human capability by attempting to break a 72-metre depth record. Despite resurfacing and signaling his well-being, Mevoli suddenly lost consciousness, casting a pall over the event and prompting its cancellation in reverence to his memory.

The official statement from the competition organizers confirmed the devastating news, expressing profound sorrow over Mevoli’s untimely passing. Freediving’s governing body later determined the cause of death to be a pulmonary hemorrhage resulting from barotrauma, a rare but grave consequence of the intense pressures encountered during deep dives.

Mevoli’s legacy transcended his exceptional athletic achievements, with friends and peers commemorating his boundless talent, altruism, and indomitable spirit. Grant Graves, a close friend and fellow freediver, lauded Mevoli as unparalleled in his skill and character, emphasizing his irreplaceable presence in the community.

The passing of Nicholas Mevoli marks a poignant moment in the history of freediving, serving as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with the pursuit of excellence in extreme sports.
