Tragedy strikes 4×4 enthusiast trio: Land rover expedition turns fatal in river catastrophe

Leslie Forbes, Kenneth Patrick Hibbins, and Scott Thomas daddy meet untimely demise in off-road expedition gone awry

In a heart-wrenching incident, three avid 4×4 enthusiasts lost their lives when their Land Rover was engulfed by floodwaters during an off-road expedition. Leslie Forbes and Kenneth Patrick Hibbins tragically met their end while attempting to cross the River Esk near Glaisdale in North Yorkshire on Thursday, December 28, last year. Another victim, Scott Thomas Daddy, also succumbed to the same accident, with inquests revealing the devastating details.

The inquest disclosed that Mr. Forbes and Mr. Hibbins, both members of a 4×4 enthusiasts group, were part of a convoy of vehicles navigating the challenging terrain. Coroner Jon Heath stated that the vehicle was “swept away” by the river during the off-road adventure, leading to the untimely demise of the two men. Pronounced dead at the scene, the cause of death for both was determined as drowning, and the hearing was adjourned for further investigation.

The tragic incident unfolded at around 11:50 am on December 28, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly to the River Esk in North Yorkshire. The Land Rover Discovery, submerged in the floodwaters, was retrieved at 12:10 pm, revealing the lifeless bodies of the three enthusiasts.

Scott Thomas Daddy, 28, who also lost his life in the accident, was described as “a loving son, brother, uncle, and boyfriend” by his grieving family. Known for his passion for 4×4 adventures, green laning, scouting, and outdoor activities, Daddy was remembered as a dedicated Hull FC supporter with a wide circle of friends. His family expressed shock at the sudden loss, emphasizing his promising future and the significant void left by his departure.

The families of Leslie Forbes, 70, and Kenneth Patrick Hibbins, 59, also released statements mourning their loved ones. Mr. Forbes was remembered as a “loving husband, father, and grandfather,” while Mr. Hibbins was described as someone “sadly missed by all his close friends and work colleagues.”

As investigations continue, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in off-road expeditions, urging enthusiasts to exercise caution and prioritize safety in their adventurous pursuits.
