Violence erupts in Sheffield’s college close, prompting urgent police response

In a shocking incident in Sheffield, a murder investigation has been initiated after a car ploughed into a crowd of people, resulting in the death of a 46-year-old man and leaving others injured. The incident unfolded in College Close, where emergency services responded to reports of violence and disorder.

The tragedy occurred just after 2 pm on Wednesday when a car collided with a group of people outside a property in Burngreave. South Yorkshire Police swiftly arrived at the scene, with witnesses reporting the presence of up to eight police vehicles, along with a fire engine and an ambulance.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while another man, aged 55, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Both individuals are currently in police custody.

Senior Investigating Officer DCI Andrew Knowles expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are now dealing with a murder investigation and understand the distress this will cause to those directly affected and the wider community.”

He further explained that a large cordon has been established in the area, and authorities are conducting CCTV and house-to-house inquiries. Night patrols will be conducted to offer reassurance and gather information.
