The 2027 Open at St Andrews gives Tiger Woods a realistic stage for a majestic farewell tour.

Tiger Woods may have just been handed the perfect opportunity for a grand farewell. The R&A’s announcement that the 2027 Open Championship will return to St Andrews has shifted the timeline for the 15-time major champion, offering him a chance to play one final tournament at golf’s most hallowed ground.

Woods, who crossed the iconic Swilcan Bridge at The 150th Open in 2022, had described the moment as possibly his last at St Andrews. Fighting back tears after a standing ovation on the 18th, he confessed, “It’s very emotional for me. I’ve been coming here since 1995. The next one comes in 2030, and I don’t know if I’ll be physically able to play then.”

However, with the announcement of The 155th Open taking place in 2027, Woods may have a realistic shot at one last hurrah on the Old Course. By then, he’ll be five months shy of his 52nd birthday, but for a player whose career is defined by defying odds, another competitive outing at St Andrews is not unthinkable.

After his near-fatal car crash in 2021, Woods has faced relentless physical challenges. Last season, his appearances were limited to the four majors and the Genesis Invitational, where he struggled to finish tournaments. His only complete 72-hole performance came at The Masters, where he barely made the cut and finished last.

2027, however, offers an alluring symmetry. That year will mark 30 years since Woods’ landmark victory at The Masters in 1997, the start of his meteoric rise. The US Open will also take place at Pebble Beach, where Woods delivered one of the greatest performances in golfing history, winning by 15 strokes in 2000. It was that same summer that Woods claimed his first St Andrews Open title, dominating the field to win by 12 shots.

St Andrews, Augusta National, and Pebble Beach are the holy trinity of Woods’ storied career. These venues hold his most iconic triumphs, and 2027 aligns perfectly for a symbolic farewell tour.

Only Woods knows if he’ll be ready to call time on his competitive career by then. However, if he chooses to bow out at The Open, the Old Course would undoubtedly provide the grandest and most fitting stage. The Swilcan Bridge, with its rich history and timeless legacy, could mark the perfect conclusion to the extraordinary story of Tiger Woods.

For fans, 2027 will be a must-watch, and a pilgrimage to witness Woods at St Andrews could become a once-in-a-lifetime event.
