Marvel confirms seven major X-Men roles at D23 and sets the MCU film for May 2028

Marvel Studios has finally pulled back the curtain on its new generation of X-Men, revealing seven major cast members during Disney’s D23 showcase.

The announcement puts several months of reports and rumours to rest while delivering a few genuine surprises. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor will take on Cyclops, and Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost.

Christopher Abbott will portray Professor Charles Xavier, while Inde Navarrette has landed the role of Rogue. Maya Boyd will play Storm, and Adam Driver is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain Mister Sinister.

The biggest certainty going into D23 surrounded Sink. The Stranger Things star had already appeared as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, making her involvement in the upcoming X-Men film far less mysterious than several of the other roles.

The rest of the announcement brings much more clarity to the team Marvel is assembling.

Connor, known for Heartstopper and Warfare, will play Cyclops, while Abbott, whose credits include Poor Things and Girls, becomes the MCU’s Professor Xavier. Weaving, known for Ready or Not and Babylon, takes on Emma Frost.

Navarrette’s casting as Rogue stands out because other names had previously circulated around the part. Cailee Spaeny and Odessa A’zion had been linked with the character, while Navarrette had met with X-Men director Jake Schreier and had previously suggested an interest in playing Mystique.

Instead, Marvel has handed her Rogue.

Boyd is another striking addition to the cast. The Broadway performer has been selected to play Storm despite not having starred in a feature film, making the role a major step into blockbuster cinema.

Driver, meanwhile, will move from the Star Wars universe into Marvel as Mister Sinister, giving the announced line-up its major villain.

What Marvel revealed at D23 still does not amount to a confirmed complete roster.

Other actors and characters have continued to appear in casting reports and speculation, including Charles Melton in connection with Beast. Marvel did not confirm that casting as part of the announced group, leaving further additions possible.

There are also unanswered questions about where these characters will first fit into the wider MCU.

The announcement did not establish whether the newly revealed X-Men will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars or Avengers: Doomsday. For now, their involvement in those films remains unconfirmed based on the information released with this casting news.

One major detail, however, is now settled.

Marvel has confirmed that Jake Schreier’s X-Men film will arrive in cinemas on 5 May 2028. Schreier is directing the project as the studio prepares to bring a new central generation of mutant characters into the MCU.

The casting gives Marvel a mixture of established performers and newer names.

Sink and Connor arrive with major existing audiences, while Navarrette has emerged rapidly into a prominent Marvel role. Boyd’s casting as Storm represents one of the less expected choices in the group, while Driver and Abbott bring considerably more film experience to the ensemble.

Even after D23, significant pieces of Marvel’s X-Men plan remain hidden.

There is still no confirmed full cast, and the studio has not revealed exactly how this team will connect with other upcoming MCU films.

But the central picture is much clearer than it was before the showcase.

Jean Grey, Cyclops, Professor Xavier, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm and Mister Sinister now have their MCU actors, and Marvel’s next X-Men film has a firm date on the calendar.

The mutants will return to cinemas on 5 May 2028.
