Jo Koy’s quip on Taylor swift at awards ceremony falls flat, leaving fans cringing over the uncomfortable exchange

The 81st Golden Globes Awards took an awkward turn for Taylor Swift as comedian Jo Koy aimed a joke her way during the hosting duties, leaving both the singer and viewers visibly uncomfortable.

Koy, attempting to infuse humour into the ceremony, navigated through a monologue that received mixed responses from the audience. From jests about Saltburn star Barry Keoghan to references to the diabetes drug Ozempic, Koy’s comedic approach treaded the fine line between laughter and cringe.

However, it was Koy’s comment about Swift’s involvement in the NFL and her connection with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce that struck an off-note. Drawing a comparison between the Golden Globes and the NFL, Koy quipped, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL – on the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there’s just more to go to.”

The audience’s response was a handful of laughs, but the camera cut to Swift revealed her clear displeasure. Pursed lips and an unimpressed stare accompanied by a pointed sip of her drink made her sentiments evident.

Koy, sensing the awkwardness, trailed off and added a hasty, “Sorry about that.” However, the apology didn’t prevent Swift’s fans, known as Swifties, from rushing to her defense on social media.

While some acknowledged the joke’s awkwardness without deeming it offensive, others expressed second-hand embarrassment for the singer. Despite the discomfort, Koy’s attempt to inject humour into the Golden Globes didn’t resonate well, and the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement ultimately went to the film “Barbie.”
