Cody Balmer, 38, faces multiple charges after setting fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion while Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep
In a chilling early-morning incident, Pennsylvania’s governor’s mansion was set on fire while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep inside. The attack occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025, when 38-year-old Cody Balmer allegedly breached the residence’s security. The suspect, who had made homemade incendiary devices, will face serious charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person.
According to Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, Balmer hopped a fence to access the mansion before breaking in and igniting the flames. Police had been actively searching for Balmer during the time of the attack, as he had managed to evade capture. The fire, which was quickly extinguished, caused significant damage to a portion of the mansion, though fortunately, no one was harmed.
Governor Shapiro, who had been celebrating the first night of Passover with his family, later posted on social media about the frightening event, stating, “Thank God no one was injured and the fire was extinguished.” He expressed deep gratitude to law enforcement and first responders, acknowledging their quick actions that ensured the safety of his family.
At a press conference, Governor Shapiro delivered an emotional statement condemning the violence. “This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society,” he said, emphasizing the need for unity and an end to politically motivated acts of violence. “We have to be better than this,” he added.
In the aftermath of the attack, the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that the fire was indeed an act of arson, and the investigation is ongoing. Before Balmer’s arrest, a $10,000 reward had been offered for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible for the fire.

Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Greg Rothman expressed relief that the Shapiro family was safe and condemned the violence. “There is no place for violence, arson, and the destruction of property in our society,” he said, urging swift justice for those responsible.
The National Governors Association also offered its support to Governor Shapiro and his family, denouncing the act of arson and expressing solidarity in the wake of the traumatic event.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the rising tensions in the current political climate, with violence and threats becoming an increasingly common response to political differences. While Governor Shapiro and his family are safe, the emotional toll of the attack will likely remain as a painful reminder of the dangers that public officials face.
For now, Balmer remains in custody, and authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the attack. The investigation into his motives will be crucial in determining whether this act of violence was politically or personally motivated.
