Former home secretary issues stark warning as Rishi Sunak’s flagship legislation Faces crisis

In a startling development, Suella Braverman, former Home Secretary, has issued a grave warning, suggesting that dozens of Tory MPs are on the brink of resigning if the issues surrounding Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda Bill are not swiftly addressed. Braverman, speaking to GB News, indicated that she would vote against the legislation in a Commons showdown unless the Prime Minister accepts crucial amendments.

Braverman emphasized that she and other backbenchers have engaged constructively in an effort to make the Rwanda Bill more effective. However, she expressed deep concerns about the current state of the legislation, asserting that it falls short of serving the interests of the British public, stating, “It amounts to a betrayal to the British public.”

A significant contingent of fifty backbenchers, including former Prime Minister Liz Truss, have rallied behind amendments proposed by ringleader Robert Jenrick, who recently resigned as immigration minister in protest against the legislation.

The Tory rebels argue that the current form of the Bill leaves room for the policy to be derailed by individual appeals. They are advocating for ministers to disregard judgments from the Strasbourg court.

In her interview with GB News, Braverman indicated a willingness to take a firm stance, stating, “If there are no improvements to it, I will have to vote against it.” When questioned about the concerns of other ministers and whether resignations are being contemplated, she revealed, “Personally speaking, I have been very concerned by the high number of ministers to whom I have spoken, who have grave reservations about this Bill.”

Under further probing about the extent of these concerns, Braverman disclosed, “Oh, dozens. I actually haven’t spoken to many ministers who genuinely believe that this bill is going to work. Privately, under their breath, they say to me, ‘We know this Bill won’t work.'”
