Stephen Willits plunges to death hours after engagement in Corfu hotel

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a British man, Stephen Willits, lost his life in a tragic accident just hours after proposing to his girlfriend during a holiday in Corfu, Greece. The 45-year-old Alton Towers worker, known affectionately as ‘Mr Fix-It’, had been celebrating his engagement with hotel guests and loved ones back in the UK before the incident occurred.

The couple had returned to their hotel room around midnight after a celebratory meal and drinks at the hotel bar. Tragically, Stephen fell from the third-floor balcony of the hotel while his fiancée was in the bathroom, suffering fatal injuries. The inquest revealed that Stephen was ‘heavily intoxicated’ at the time of the fall, which may have contributed to the accident.

Leslie Willits, Stephen’s sister, paid tribute to her brother, describing him as “the nicest person ever” and “the best uncle ever.” The family is devastated by the loss, especially under such sudden and tragic circumstances.

The inquest, held back in the UK, concluded that the exact cause of Stephen’s fall remains unknown. Assistant coroner Daniel Howe stated, “Stephen died as a result of falling from height. He seemed to be in good spirits… Why he approached the balcony, I cannot determine.”

The news of Stephen’s death has sent shockwaves through his community in Uttoxeter, where he was a well-known and beloved figure. His untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
