French World Cup winner Raphael Varane, 30, has sparked controversy with an Instagram post from an undisclosed ski resort, raising eyebrows at Old Trafford. United’s strict policy against skiing during the season could land the injury-prone centre-back in hot water with manager Erik ten Hag.

In the photo, Varane appears innocent, standing against a backdrop of snowy slopes and skiers enjoying their time. However, the club’s ban on winter sports is well-known, and Ten Hag may not be pleased if his key defender took unnecessary risks.

Skiing accidents have haunted footballers before, as evidenced by Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer breaking his leg during the Bundesliga winter break in 2022. The fear of such injuries has led to the majority of clubs across Europe enforcing bans on skiing during the season.

A Varane representative denied any skiing activities at the resort, but rumours are swirling about the defender’s future at Old Trafford. With interest from Saudi Pro League clubs and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, whispers suggest Varane might be eyeing an exit.

Having joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in July 2021 for £42 million, Varane’s four-time Champions League-winning status may not be enough to secure his place if the skiing controversy escalates. With just one season left on his £340,000-a-week deal, Varane’s future at the club hangs in the balance, with an option for an additional year.

Having appeared 18 times in various competitions this season, Varane’s fluctuating status in the team, including a stint behind Harry Maguire, has fueled speculation about his commitment to the Red Devils. Despite recent appearances, whispers of Varane’s desire to part ways with United continue to circulate.”
