One passenger died and 30 others sustained injuries when a Singapore Airlines flight from London experienced severe turbulence on Tuesday. The Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 229 people, made an emergency landing in Bangkok, according to officials and the airline.

Singapore Airlines issued a statement expressing deep condolences to the family of the deceased passenger. The airline also apologized for the distressing experience endured by both passengers and crew. The company is coordinating with Thai authorities to offer all necessary support.

The incident occurred as the aircraft flew into an air pocket while the cabin crew served breakfast, causing severe turbulence. The pilots then requested an emergency landing, as confirmed by Suvarnabhumi Airport General Manager Kittipong Kittikachorn at a news conference.

A 73-year-old British man died, likely due to a heart attack during the turbulence. Seven passengers suffered critical head injuries, and 18 people were hospitalized. Currently, 12 remain under medical care, Singapore Airlines stated.

FlightRadar 24 spokesperson mentioned that initial data analysis showed the plane tilted upward before resuming its cruising altitude within a minute. The exact sequence of events remains unclear due to the lack of available tracking data.

Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student aboard the flight, described the harrowing experience to Reuters. He recounted how the plane suddenly tilted upward, followed by a dramatic drop that launched unbelted passengers into the cabin ceiling. The turbulence caused some passengers to hit and dent overhead baggage compartments.

Emergency personnel and airport staff promptly responded when the plane landed in Bangkok. Most passengers wore seatbelts during the incident, said Kittikachorn. FlightRadar 24 further explained that the turbulence likely occurred before the standard descent from 37,000 to 31,000 feet.

The aircraft carried 211 passengers and 18 crew members en route to Singapore. Following the emergency landing, Singapore Airlines arranged another plane to transport uninjured passengers to their destination.

Singapore news outlet CNA published images showing anxious passengers with oxygen masks deployed, personal items scattered, and rubbish littering the cabin. The plane requested an emergency landing at 3:35 p.m. local time and landed at 3:51, according to Suvarnabhumi Airport, though the airline reported the landing time as 3:45.

Turbulence-related accidents are the most common type of airline incidents, as highlighted by a 2021 National Transportation Safety Board study. From 2009 to 2018, turbulence accounted for over a third of reported airline accidents, often resulting in serious injuries but typically not causing aircraft damage.
