In a dramatic and harrowing turn of events, an armed individual wielding a crossbow was fatally shot by the police today in the early hours of the morning in Southwark, London. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was also armed with a knife, sword, and hatchet, and was wearing body armour at the time of the confrontation. The incident unfolded around 5 am when the man attempted to force his way into a residence, threatening people known to him inside the property.
Initially, unarmed police officers attempted to engage with the man and de-escalate the situation, but they were forced to request backup as he posed a serious threat. Additional police officers quickly descended on the quiet residential street, and as the man gained access to the building, he was shot and killed. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting.

A witness captured the intense moment when Metropolitan Police officers and paramedics provided first aid in the middle of the street. The aftermath revealed a scene scattered with weapons, including crossbow bolts, and a gas mask strewn across the road. The police later confirmed that the deceased man was also carrying a knife, sword, and hatchet, in addition to his body armour.
Aerial images of the street depicted items like water bottles scattered on the pavement, with crime scene markers placed beside them. Fortunately, only two individuals inside the building suffered minor injuries during the confrontation.
Residents in the vicinity were startled awake by the commotion, with many describing hearing shouting and banging. Akber Baloch, a restaurant owner, expressed his concern, stating, “I was afraid about what was happening. I am really worried, and it makes you feel insecure. I do not know who is wrong or right in this situation, but it makes you feel insecure.”
Valeria Bocanegra, an IT consultant, recounted, “I could hear shouting but could not hear what was being said. I could hear someone screaming and then everything became quiet. I think it was a man and a woman fighting.”
Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that the noises even disturbed her dog, who started barking, and she said, “It sounded to me like someone was trying to get in or maybe banging furniture. You can see this sort of stuff on TV, but when you see it is real and it is real people’s lives – it is just really sad. It is going to be really traumatic for the people who were inside.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initiated an independent investigation, as is customary in cases of fatal police shootings. Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, responsible for policing Southwark, expressed his condolences, saying, “My thoughts are with all those affected by this incident. We will fully support the IOPC investigation into the full circumstances of what happened.” An IOPC spokesperson added, “Our investigation is in its very early stages.” The incident has left the local community deeply concerned, and questions surrounding the tragic event continue to arise.
