Sheree Spencer sentenced to four years for subjecting her husband, Richard Spencer, to severe controlling and coercive behaviour, as captured in chilling nanny cam footage
In a shocking case of domestic abuse that has rattled the community near York, Sheree Spencer, 46, has been sentenced to four years in prison for the horrific abuse of her husband, Richard Spencer, 47, over their 20-year marriage. The abuse came to light after nanny cam footage revealed the extent of the torment Richard endured, including being held at knifepoint.

It was only when a friend of Richard’s discovered some of the footage that the truth was unveiled, leading to Sheree’s arrest.
The distressing videos, along with additional evidence including audio clips and photos of Richard’s injuries, were presented in court. Richard, who worked in network design for BT, had been secretly saving footage of the abuse as a precaution, fearing he would be denied access to his children if the marriage ended.
The couple, who met in a club in 2000 and married nine years later in Thailand, lived with their three daughters in a seven-bedroom home. The abuse began just months into their relationship, starting with physical assaults and escalating over the years to include financial control and severe physical attacks. Richard recounted how he would often curl into a fetal position to protect himself during the attacks and use makeup to cover his bruises.
Sheree, who was a senior project manager for HM Prison and Probation Service, manipulated Richard financially, leading him into £45,000 of debt to maintain a lifestyle beyond their means. She would also use the threat of police intervention to maintain control over him.
The turning point came when Sheree called one of Richard’s friends, claiming to be scared of Richard’s drunken behavior. When the friend arrived, he discovered the truth and encouraged Richard to share the evidence with the police.
Judge Kate Rayfield, during sentencing at Hull Crown Court, described the case as “the worst case of controlling and coercive behavior” she had ever seen. Richard has since decided to share his story in a documentary titled “My Wife, My Abuser: The Secret Footage,” set to air on Channel 5, with the hope of raising awareness and helping others in similar situations.
Richard is now working with the Mankind Initiative charity to support other men who have been victims of domestic abuse. He has found new love and reflects on his past experiences with a newfound understanding of what true love means.
