Straka wins his third PGA Tour title at the American Express, overcoming a nervy finish and late bogeys to secure a two-shot victory over Justin Thomas in La Quinta

Sepp Straka claimed his third PGA Tour title at The American Express in California, securing a two-shot victory over Justin Thomas despite a tense final round filled with pressure and late errors.

Starting the day with a four-shot lead, Straka faced a strong challenge from Thomas, who had been in excellent form. But after a solid 12-foot birdie on the opening hole, Straka maintained control, playing aggressively while holding off the American, who posted a 66 to finish at 23-under.

Straka, who had been on the verge of completing 72 bogey-free holes, dropped shots on two of the final three holes. A wayward second shot on the 16th, followed by a missed par putt, shook his confidence. On the 18th, he made a bunker mistake and missed a par putt, but ultimately sank a crucial bogey putt to seal the win with a two-under 70 and finish on 25-under.

Reflecting on his nerves, Straka admitted, “Stomach in a knot, the whole nine.” Despite his late hiccups, the 31-year-old Austrian showed composure and was able to hold off Thomas, who had charged hard on the front nine, reducing Straka’s lead to three shots at one point.

The victory marks Straka’s third tour title and underscores his resilience under pressure. With a birdie on the 13th hole, Straka managed to extend his lead back to four shots, which proved vital in the end.

For Thomas, the search for his first PGA Tour win since 2022 continues. After a strong front nine, he couldn’t maintain his momentum on the back nine and ultimately finished two shots behind Straka.

Straka’s victory is a testament to his consistency and ability to keep calm under pressure, especially in a high-stakes final round. He now looks ahead to further success in the 2025 PGA Tour season.
