Scotland’s Yousaf set to resign as First Minister, UK media say

Former SNP leader John Swinney approached as interim First Minister

Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, is reportedly contemplating resignation rather than facing two confidence votes, according to reports from UK media outlets. While no final decision has been reached, a source close to Yousaf confirmed that resignation is being considered.

Former Scottish National Party (SNP) leader, John Swinney, has been approached by senior party members to serve as interim First Minister should Yousaf step down. However, Swinney is reportedly hesitant to take on the role due to personal circumstances.

Last week, Yousaf announced his intention to fight a vote of no confidence initiated by political opponents. This move followed his decision to withdraw from a coalition agreement and pursue a minority government.

In an interview with Sky News on Friday, Yousaf expressed confidence in his ability to survive the vote of no confidence, stating, “I’m quite confident, very confident in fact, that I’ll be able to win that vote of no confidence.”

If Yousaf were to lose the vote, parliament would have 28 days to select a new First Minister before triggering an election
