Over 600 children in remote Amazon villages receive gifts from Santa after a gruelling journey
Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, Santa Claus traded his sleigh for boats this weekend, braving the intense heat to deliver joy to children in one of Brazil’s most remote villages. Dressed in his iconic red suit and white gloves, Santa expertly navigated rivers and swamps to bring gifts to the small village of Catalão, near Manaus, in this heartfelt Santa Amazon delivery.
The annual visit was organised by Amigos do Papai Noel, a charity dedicated to spreading Christmas cheer to Amazonian children for the past 26 years. The event brought together over 600 children from various riverside communities, all eagerly awaiting the arrival of their jungle Santa.
“For the children of the rivers, nothing new usually happens,” said Raimunda Ferreira Vieira, a community leader in Catalão. “This visit feels like a gift from God.”
Santa’s journey was anything but ordinary. He sailed down the vast Amazon River on a large boat, only to transfer to a canoe to navigate a swampy tributary. Volunteers formed a human chain to unload his cargo of stuffed animals, dolls, and footballs. The lack of a pier meant two helpers had to carry Santa off the boat to keep his boots dry.
The scorching jungle heat proved no match for Jorge Alberto Moreira, the man behind the Santa costume. Despite the sweat soaking his red suit, he beamed with joy. “Every child in every community always smiles back,” Moreira said. “Wherever you go, there’s a smile. It’s a great joy.”

To ensure Santa’s arrival, children had to gather in a location where the river was deep enough for the boats to dock. Normally, the charity conducts multiple deliveries to different communities in one day, but logistical hurdles limited this year’s efforts.
Pedro Carvalho Filho, a computer programmer who manages Amigos do Papai Noel, explained, “We knew this would be difficult. Usually, we make three deliveries, but the water levels are complicated.”
Despite these obstacles, the visit proved magical. Children squealed with excitement as they received their gifts, their faces lighting up with wonder. Parents looked on, grateful for the momentary escape from the challenges of rural life.
Catalão’s community, nestled deep in the Amazon, rarely sees such festive events. Santa’s visit not only brought joy but also a sense of connection to the wider world. For many children, these gifts are a rare treat in an otherwise modest existence.
Amigos do Papai Noel has remained dedicated to its mission of delivering Christmas joy to the remote corners of the Amazon. Through their efforts, they have brought happiness to countless children, creating lasting memories and spreading hope with each Santa Amazon delivery.
As Santa’s boat disappeared into the jungle waterways, the echoes of laughter and Christmas cheer lingered in the humid air. For the children of the Amazon, Santa’s visit was more than just a holiday tradition—it was a moment of magic in the midst of the rainforest.
