Samsung rolls out April 2025 security patch for the Galaxy Note 20 series, marking one of its final updates before discontinuing support.

Samsung has released a fresh software update for the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, bringing with it the April 2025 security patch—likely among the last before the iconic series is retired from its update cycle.

Launched in August 2020, the Galaxy Note 20 lineup has reached the tail end of its five-year support lifespan. Although many users have moved on to newer Galaxy devices, the Note 20 Ultra still holds a special place in the hearts of its fans. With flagship-level specs, enduring battery life, and a performance profile that still handles multitasking and high-end gaming with ease, it remains a treasured secondary device for some Samsung loyalists.

What makes this device even more notable is its legacy. The Note 20 Ultra is the final chapter in the Galaxy Note saga—Samsung opted to end the Note brand after this generation, folding its features into the Galaxy S Ultra and Z Fold lines. This finality only adds to the emotional pull for those clinging to their stylus-equipped phones.

The Note 20 series was originally released with One UI 2.5 and Android 10. Over time, it received three major Android updates, capping out with Android 13 and One UI 5.1 in 2023. Since then, it has only been eligible for quarterly security patches—four per year. While major software innovations have passed the device by, Samsung has continued to keep it secure through regular patches.

This month’s April 2025 firmware release reinforces that commitment, even as the end looms. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S20 series has already been dropped from the update roster. That precedent strongly suggests the Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra will soon follow, possibly with one final quarterly patch before sunset.

Samsung has made no formal announcement yet about the Note 20’s removal, but industry observers expect it to occur later this year. When it happens, the Note 20 series will cease to receive any form of official software support, including critical security updates. It will effectively become a legacy device.

The update arrives just as Samsung rolls out One UI 7—based on Android 15—to its newer devices. Starting in early April 2025, the update has reached the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6/Flip6, and several Tab S10 models. Mid-range devices are expected to join the wave between May and June.

In stark contrast, the Note 20 is now frozen in time—locked out of the Android 15 experience and newer AI-powered features. However, for those who value function over novelty, the device remains solid. Users report continued satisfaction with its responsiveness and multimedia performance.

As we approach the end of an era, the Note 20 Ultra’s farewell highlights a larger trend in Samsung’s update philosophy. With newer models now receiving up to seven years of updates, including both OS upgrades and security patches, the support policy has evolved dramatically since the Note 20’s launch.

But for the faithful still gripping their last Note, this recent update is more than a security patch—it’s a reminder of the device’s enduring quality and the end of a beloved line.
