The incident, which unfolded at speeds exceeding 90mph, required the intervention of nine police cars to safely bring the £32,000 vehicle to a halt.
The 31-year-old driver, who initially reported a harrowing 35-minute ordeal that he likened to a “movie-style” scene, is now facing charges of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance. As he attempted to overtake another car, he alleged that the brakes failed, leading to an uncontrollable acceleration. Despite efforts to engage the handbrake, shift to neutral, or reverse gears, the car reportedly continued to gain speed.
The situation escalated as the driver claimed to have been forced to run through red lights and navigate a slipway roundabout before eventually moving onto the hard shoulder. He contacted emergency services, and police instructed him to remain on the hard shoulder as they dispatched eight squad cars to intercept the runaway vehicle.
The pursuit culminated in a coordinated effort by Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police to employ specialist tactics, ultimately resulting in the vehicle being rammed and blocked in to bring it to a stop.
Jaguar Land Rover has responded to the incident, stating that they are conducting an urgent review to determine the cause of the incident. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that the safety of their clients and vehicles is their highest priority.
This shocking incident has raised concerns about the safety of electric vehicles and the potential for malfunctions that could lead to dangerous situations on the road.
