A farewell to a drumming maestro – Ac/Dc’s Colin Burgess leaves behind a sonic legacy

In a somber announcement on social media, iconic Australian rock band AC/DC shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of their original drummer, Colin Burgess, at the age of 77. The rock legend, who contributed significantly to AC/DC’s early years, left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Before making history with AC/DC, Burgess, a versatile musician, played in various bands alongside his brother, Denny. Notably, he showcased his drumming prowess as a member of the pop-rock sensation The Masters Apprentices, earning the band a well-deserved spot in the ARIA Hall of Fame from 1968 to 1972.

Burgess officially joined AC/DC in 1973, alongside the likes of Angus Young, Dave Evans, Larry Van Kriedt, and Malcolm Young. His powerful drumming added a unique rhythm to the band’s early sound, becoming an integral part of their musical journey.

Although Burgess temporarily parted ways with AC/DC in February 1974, he later rejoined for a brief yet impactful stint in 1975. His role as the band’s first drummer set the stage for AC/DC’s meteoric rise to fame.

AC/DC, now comprising Angus Young, vocalist Brian Johnson, bassist Cliff Williams, drummer Phil Rudd, and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, expressed their sorrow on X, previously known as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The band’s heartfelt post reads: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess. He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”

Tributes from the current AC/DC band members flooded social media, creating a poignant moment for fans and the music community alike. Fans took to various platforms to share their condolences and memories of the influential drummer.

As the music world mourns the loss of a true rock icon, Burgess’s legacy lives on through the unforgettable beats that echoed in the early chapters of AC/DC’s legendary career.
