Rehana Marylebone Khawaja celebrates connection with station by making it part of her identity

In an extraordinary display of affection and commitment, Rehana Marylebone Khawaja, a dedicated Chiltern Railways employee, has legally changed her name to include that of her favourite train station, Marylebone, marking a unique bond with the place she describes as having a soul. With a career spanning nearly two decades with Chiltern Railways, Khawaja’s journey through various roles culminated in her current position as a safeguarding and security manager. Her decision to change her name aligns with Marylebone station’s 125th anniversary and her own 20th anniversary with the company.

Khawaja’s passion for Marylebone station transcends the physical structure; it’s the station’s warm and welcoming atmosphere, bolstered by the hardworking and smiling staff, that captured her heart. Describing the station as a “home away from home,” Khawaja felt an overwhelming connection, especially during her tenure as station manager, which prompted her to officially adopt the station’s name as part of her own. This move symbolizes her deep-seated affection and eternal bond with the place that has significantly shaped her professional and personal life.

Vanessa Russell, HR Director at Chiltern Railways, expressed her admiration for Khawaja’s gesture, highlighting the community feel and significant impact the station has on those connected to it.

Beyond her name change, Khawaja, alongside her colleague Laura, is embarking on a charity walk between all 27 stations from London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street. The walk aims to raise funds for Safeline and The Railway Children charities, showcasing Khawaja’s commitment to giving back to the community and supporting causes close to her heart.

Khawaja’s story is a testament to the profound connections people can form with places, especially those that play a pivotal role in their lives. Her decision to become Rehana Marylebone Khawaja is a heartwarming reminder of the impact of work and place on individual identity.
