INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer were commissioned in Mumbai, marking a milestone in India’s naval capabilities
On 15 January 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval combatants in Mumbai, underscoring India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and its increasing maritime strength. The three ships—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—were dedicated to the nation during a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard, marking a major leap in India’s defence capabilities.
The three ships represent cutting-edge advancements in naval warfare. INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. This stealth frigate is equipped with state-of-the-art technology aimed at enhancing survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, making it a formidable presence on the high seas.
INS Surat, part of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is the fourth and final ship in the class. It is regarded as one of the largest and most sophisticated destroyers globally, showcasing India’s capability to produce complex warships. This ship is equipped with powerful guided missile systems, making it a strategic asset for the Indian Navy.

The commissioning of these ships is a testament to India’s technological and industrial advancements, as well as its focus on bolstering defence manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. This move also reinforces India’s commitment to enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.
Prime Minister Modi, during the ceremony, emphasised the importance of indigenously manufactured defence assets and the role they play in safeguarding the country’s interests. “These warships and submarines mark a new era for India’s naval forces and reflect our dedication to enhancing the nation’s security,” Modi said.
The commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer comes at a time when India is intensifying efforts to modernise its armed forces, with a focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing. With these advancements, India is poised to become a stronger player in global maritime security.
