The upcoming sports drama will explore the partnership between Brendan Ingle and ‘prince’ Naseem Hamed, set against the backdrop of 1980s and ’90s Britain

Pierce Brosnan is set to portray the renowned Irish boxing trainer Brendan Ingle in the new biographical film “Giant.” The movie will focus on Ingle’s mentorship of the British former world featherweight champion, ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, played by Amir El-Masry. Sylvester Stallone will serve as an executive producer, adding significant clout to the project.

Brendan Ingle, hailing from Dublin, made his mark as one of Britain’s greatest boxing trainers out of his Wincobank gym in Sheffield, England. Ingle, who also worked as a steel industry worker before turning to boxing training, helped shape the careers of four world champions, including Hamed. His training methods and dedication to the sport left an indelible mark on boxing, with his death in 2018 marking the end of an era.

The film’s narrative delves into Hamed’s rise from the working-class streets of Sheffield under Ingle’s guidance. Their unique partnership, combined with Hamed’s distinctive boxing style, charismatic presence, and dominance in the ring, propelled them to international fame. “Giant” will also address the challenges they faced, including the pervasive Islamophobia and racism during the 1980s and 1990s in Britain, adding depth to the portrayal of their journey.

The screenplay for “Giant” is penned by Rowan Athale, known for his work on “Gangs of London,” who will also direct the film. The inclusion of Sylvester Stallone as an executive producer links the film to a legacy of celebrated boxing movies, promising a compelling addition to the genre.

Filming is scheduled to begin later this month, with the movie world eagerly anticipating its release. As the film brings to life the complex dynamics between Ingle and Hamed, it aims to offer not only a sports drama but a poignant commentary on societal issues, making it a must-watch for both sports enthusiasts and those interested in cultural history.
