PebbleOS makes a grand return with two open-source, hackable smartwatches, promising retro charm and up to 30 days of battery life

Pebble smartwatches are making a comeback, resurrected by founder Eric Migicovsky under the newly liberated PebbleOS. Two new models—Pebble Core 2 Duo and Pebble Core Time 2—are now available for pre-order and will ship later this year. Both watches retain the signature always-on e-paper displays and long battery life while introducing minor improvements.

The Core 2 Duo, priced at $149 (£115), features a 1.26-inch black-and-white e-paper display, an ultra-light polycarbonate frame, and IPX8 waterproofing. It lacks a heart rate monitor but includes a microphone, barometer, and compass. Meanwhile, the Core Time 2, costing $225 (£173), offers a 1.5-inch colour touchscreen display with 53% more screen space and an 88% pixel boost. It comes with a premium metal frame, a heart rate monitor, and the same IPX8 waterproof rating.

Both watches run PebbleOS, allowing access to over 10,000 existing Pebble apps and watch faces. Thanks to Google’s decision to free the software after acquiring Fitbit (which had previously bought Pebble), these devices promise a nostalgic yet functional smartwatch experience. While they won’t compete with high-end smartwatches, their simplicity, retro charm, and 30-day battery life make them a compelling choice for fans of the original Pebble.

The Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 cater to different types of users. The Core 2 Duo is a budget-friendly option for those who prioritize simplicity and long-lasting performance. It’s perfect for minimalists who don’t need a heart rate monitor but still want reliable functionality. On the other hand, the Core Time 2 offers more advanced features, including the heart rate monitor and a larger, more vibrant display, making it ideal for users seeking a more modern smartwatch experience with the same PebbleOS charm.

While these smartwatches are far from being powerhouses in terms of features, they appeal to a specific audience who values longevity and ease of use over the complexity of premium devices. The extended battery life—up to 30 days on a single charge—makes them stand out from competitors that often require daily or bi-daily charging, offering users a more convenient and hassle-free experience.

Pebble’s return with these two models highlights the importance of a dedicated fan base and the success of retro designs. The simplicity of PebbleOS combined with a functional, hackable approach allows users to customize their experience without feeling overwhelmed by unnecessary features. As the smartwatch industry continues to evolve, Pebble’s latest devices may provide the perfect solution for those looking for nostalgia and practicality wrapped into one affordable package.
