Heartbreaking tale of 21-year-old Gerald Green urges others to prioritize their health

A devastating story unfolds as 21-year-old Gerald Green, hailing from Paisley, tragically loses his life mere days after being diagnosed with a rapidly spreading form of cancer. His family’s plea echoes, urging others to seek prompt medical attention.

In the days leading up to his untimely death, Gerald experienced back pain, initially attributing it to a need for a new bed. As his condition worsened with bouts of vomiting, he chose to conceal his symptoms from his parents. However, when his concerned mother, Paula, discovered he had been coughing up blood, she rushed him to the Royal Alexandra Hospital on January 19.

Medics discovered Gerald was severely anaemic, leading to surgery to drain his kidney. A critical turn ensued when, during the operation, he stopped breathing, compelling doctors to induce a coma in a desperate bid to sustain his life. Upon waking, the devastating revelation struck – Gerald had an incurable form of cancer spreading rapidly.

Transferred to St Vincent’s Hospice for palliative care on January 30, Gerald’s health deteriorated rapidly, culminating in his passing within hours of arrival. His family, shattered by the sudden loss, now implores young individuals to heed changes in their bodies and seek medical help promptly.

Gerald’s cousin, Ailley Colquhoun, shared the heartbreaking account, revealing Gerald’s last words as he bid farewell to his family. The family, grappling with the shock of his swift departure, has initiated a fundraiser to support funeral expenses and provide Gerald with the farewell he deserves.

Described as a funny and cheeky lad, Gerald was a devoted caregiver to his father, Gerry, who had suffered a stroke. A sports enthusiast, he had a passion for St Mirren FC and was remembered as a great footballer by friends and family. Despite the challenges he faced as a carer, Gerald approached life with a light-hearted demeanor, leaving behind a void that many find difficult to comprehend.
