Experts claim a simple daily supplement could slow ageing and cut the risk of deadly diseases.
A major breakthrough in anti-ageing science has sent shockwaves through the medical community—researchers have discovered that a single gram of omega-3 per day could slow the ageing process. The findings, published in Nature Aging, suggest that this common supplement could extend healthspan and reduce age-related diseases.
Omega-3, an essential fatty acid found in foods like fish oil and cod liver oil, has long been praised for its health benefits. But now, scientists believe it could be the key to delaying the effects of ageing itself. The study, led by Professor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari at the University of Zurich, found that participants who took one gram of omega-3 daily for three years aged three months less than those who did not. When combined with vitamin D and regular exercise, the effect was even more pronounced, slowing biological ageing by up to four months.

The implications are profound—if omega-3 supplementation continues to prove effective in further studies, it could become a vital tool in combating age-related decline.
The Do-Health trial, a large-scale European study, also revealed additional benefits of omega-3. The supplement reduced the likelihood of falls in older adults by 10% and cut infection rates by 13%. More strikingly, when combined with vitamin D and exercise, it slashed the risk of developing pre-frailty—a condition that signals the early stages of physical or cognitive decline—by 39%. Even more astonishing, the combination reduced the risk of invasive cancers by 61%.
Experts are now calling for further research to explore omega-3’s full potential. While some sceptics caution that the findings need more validation, the results so far have generated excitement in the scientific community. With the rise of age-related diseases and the growing burden on healthcare systems, this simple and affordable intervention could change the way we approach ageing.
