Premier league club initiates managerial change amid poor performance

In a decisive move, Nottingham Forest has parted ways with manager Steve Cooper, paving the way for talks with experienced tactician Nuno Espirito Santo to assume the managerial reins.

Cooper’s departure comes after weeks of speculation surrounding his future, triggered by a series of disappointing results, including a 3-2 defeat by Brighton, a 5-0 thrashing by Fulham, and dropped points at Wolves. The final blow came with another defeat against Tottenham on Friday night, underscoring the inevitability of his exit.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed gratitude for Cooper’s contributions, acknowledging his pivotal role in guiding Forest back to the Premier League. However, with recent struggles, Marinakis deemed a managerial change necessary.

Speaking on the decision, Marinakis stated, “We thank Steve for his dedication and commitment during his time with us, as well as the incredible connection he forged with our supporters and the city of Nottingham.”

While Cooper’s tenure included securing promotion to the Premier League and maintaining a 16th-place finish last season, Forest’s current run of poor form prompted Marinakis to seek a replacement.

The club has reportedly entered advanced talks with former Tottenham and Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The 49-year-old Portuguese coach, known for leading England Under-17s to a World Cup title in 2017, is expected to take over imminently.

Forest, currently in 16th place, has struggled with only three wins in 16 Premier League matches this season. Despite sitting five points clear of the relegation zone, Marinakis, who invested over £150 million into the squad, believes the team should be performing better.

Nuno, a popular figure among Nottingham Forest fans, left his previous position at Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ittihad last month. With extensive Premier League experience from his spells at Wolves and Spurs, Nuno aims to rejuvenate a team that has not secured a league victory in 13 games.

The formal appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo will mark a significant chapter for Nottingham Forest, offering the manager an opportunity to redeem his Premier League reputation after a brief and challenging stint with Tottenham during the 2021/22 campaign.
