Salt Lake County homeowners’ generational collection leads to the hazardous situation

A quiet neighbourhood in Salt Lake County was thrown into chaos when officials discovered large quantities of explosive material inside a local home on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. Unified Fire Authority responded to what they described as “a lot” of “ancient dynamite” found at the residence.

Capt. Tony Barker of Unified Fire Authority revealed that the dynamite had been in the possession of the homeowner’s family for “generations and generations.” He commented, “To say that he’s a collector of fine explosives would be an understatement.”

The situation unfolded when a resident called a friend for advice on how to handle the explosives. Concerned about the potential danger, hazardous materials teams, bomb squad members, and personnel from various agencies including the Utah Department of Health, EPA, and Unified Police Department, were called to the scene.

Despite the alarming discovery, Barker emphasized that there was no indication of malicious intent behind the homeowner’s possession of the explosives. However, due to safety concerns, the bomb squad planned to conduct a controlled detonation to dispose of the dynamite. Barker assured that the blast would be contained to the home, but warned that the house would become uninhabitable afterwards.

As a precautionary measure, emergency responders evacuated homes in the blast radius while neighbours outside the immediate danger zone were asked to shelter in place. Firefighters remained on standby in case of any unforeseen complications during the disposal process.

The exact age and quantity of the explosive material were not disclosed by officials, leaving the neighbourhood on edge as they awaited the resolution of the hazardous situation.
