Ancient stone formation preceding Stonehenge found under Lake Michigan
While Stonehenge in England continues to captivate the imagination with its enigmatic allure, a startling discovery beneath the waters of Lake Michigan has left scientists puzzled and intrigued.
Revealed some 17 years ago by a team of archaeologists led by Mark Holley, a professor of underwater archaeology, this submerged structure bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Stonehenge, yet predates it by a staggering 5,000 years.

The unexpected nature of the find initially confounded researchers, who were astounded by the deliberate arrangement of the stones, suggesting human intervention.
Unlike Stonehenge, whose origins remain shrouded in mystery, the stones found in Lake Michigan are estimated to be around 10,000 years old, making them among the oldest ever discovered in the United States.
While the stones share similarities in size and shape with Stonehenge, their precise origins and purpose remain elusive. Some speculate that they may have been placed there for sacred or ceremonial reasons, echoing the beliefs of the Anishinaabe people, whose ancestors once inhabited the region.
Intriguingly, modern technology has shed new light on the ancient formation, with 3D renderings revealing the presence of an image resembling a Mastodon, an extinct relative of elephants. This discovery has led some experts to theorize that the site may have served as a hunting ground, with the stone arrangement acting as a ‘drive lane’ to herd animals.
Despite these insights, much about the ancient tribes who inhabited the Great Lakes region remains shrouded in mystery, with limited archaeological evidence to shed light on their way of life.
As scientists continue to unravel the secrets of this submerged marvel, the discovery of the ‘American Stonehenge’ adds another layer of intrigue to the rich tapestry of human history, reminding us of the enduring mysteries that lie beneath the surface of our world.
