The controversy began when Baroness Jacqueline Foster, a member of the House of Lords, took to social media platform X to erroneously assert that Gorgianeh was wearing the colours of the Palestinian flag and was responsible for the team’s mascot, a blue octopus. Foster claimed the mascot was an anti-Semitic symbol and called for Gorgianeh’s expulsion from the university and arrest. These claims were quickly proven false; the colours worn by Gorgianeh did not match those of the Palestinian flag, and the mascot was a collective choice by her team.

The incident, which occurred amid heightened tensions during Israel’s war on Gaza, quickly spiralled as the story was amplified by media outlets and other social media users, including right-wing commentator and journalist David Atherton. This led to Gorgianeh receiving death threats and experiencing a significant decline in her mental health.

Despite the hardships, Gorgianeh pursued justice through legal channels.
