M6 crash involving 10 vehicles near junction 33 leads to fatality, multiple injuries, and prolonged road closures
A catastrophic accident occurred on Wednesday on the M6 motorway near Lancaster, as an HGV collided with several vehicles, leading to a fatality and multiple injuries. Lancashire Police responded to emergency calls at approximately 11:20 am after receiving reports of a severe collision involving multiple vehicles close to junction 33. The M6 crash involving 10 vehicles has prompted extensive investigations to determine the cause and impact of the accident.
According to initial reports, the HGV, travelling northbound, crossed into the southbound lanes, causing a massive pile-up. The Air Ambulance and other emergency services arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, the HGV driver, a man in his 50s, was declared dead at the scene. This incident has brought attention to road safety and the need for heightened caution on high-traffic motorways, especially as the M6 remains one of the UK’s busiest routes.

The male driver of a Ford Transit and the female driver of a Suzuki Swift, both in their 40s, sustained serious injuries and received medical attention on-site before being transferred to nearby hospitals for further care. Three other individuals involved in the incident experienced minor injuries, while others who narrowly avoided more serious harm were treated at the scene.
Following the incident, Lancashire Police implemented extensive road closures to facilitate emergency response efforts, leading to significant traffic disruptions. For hours, the M6 was completely shut down in both directions. Police diverted traffic to the A6, a parallel route, to alleviate congestion, but drivers faced substantial delays. By the following day, two lanes on the northbound M6 had reopened, while lane three remained closed for inspection and repairs. On the southbound side, all lanes remain closed for essential surface repair work.
Superintendent Hassan Khan of Lancashire Police expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of the driver who tragically lost his life. Our investigation into the cause of this collision continues, and we are working tirelessly to understand how this happened.” The police have appealed to any potential witnesses to come forward and assist in the investigation.
