New study reveals ‘lengthened supersets’ boost muscle growth by 43%

Over 12 weeks, 23 untrained men participated in the study, with each individual’s right and left limbs randomly assigned to one of two conditions: reaching momentary failure in the plantarflexed position or volitional failure in the dorsiflexed position. Participants performed Smith machine calf raises with an individualized range of motion, allowing for precise measurement of muscle thickness before and after the training period.

The results were striking. Those who trained in the dorsiflexed, lengthened position saw a significantly greater increase in muscle thickness in the medial gastrocnemius compared to those who trained in the plantarflexed position. Specifically, the dorsiflexion group experienced 43.3% more muscle growth, demonstrating the superior effectiveness of training muscles in their lengthened state.

Researchers concluded that performing exercises in the lengthened position is highly effective for muscle hypertrophy, especially when aiming to enhance the size of specific muscle groups like the calves.
