Labour MP Oliver Ryan is suspended after revelations of offensive WhatsApp messages, following Andrew Gwynne’s dismissal

Labour MP Oliver Ryan has been suspended from the party over his involvement in a WhatsApp group containing offensive messages, making him the second MP to be axed in the scandal. The Mail on Sunday exposed messages in a group called “Trigger Me Timbers,” which reportedly included mockery of a Labour MP’s sexuality and denigration of a party vice-chairman.

Ryan, the Burnley MP, was summoned for a meeting with Chief Whip Sir Alan Campbell after the revelations surfaced. Ahead of the meeting, he issued a public apology, admitting the group’s comments were “completely unacceptable” and expressing regret for not speaking out at the time.

“I did not see every message, but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said,” Ryan admitted. He also confessed to making “deeply regrettable” comments himself, adding, “I wholeheartedly apologise.”

Ryan’s suspension follows that of Andrew Gwynne, who lost his role as health minister after his participation in the WhatsApp group was exposed.

A Labour spokesperson confirmed the party’s ongoing investigation, stating: “Swift action will always be taken where individuals are found to have breached the high standards expected of them.”

The scandal has further shaken Labour’s credibility, raising serious questions about internal discipline and conduct as the party seeks to maintain public trust.
