Princess of Wales becomes first royal member appointed to prestigious order of the companions of honour

Amidst ongoing battles with cancer, King Charles III has bestowed a historic royal title upon his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, in a significant move that underlines his support during challenging times.

In a ceremony held at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, King Charles appointed Middleton as a Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour. This marks the first time a member of the royal family has received such an honour, highlighting Middleton’s exceptional contributions.

Established by King George V in 1917, the Order of the Companions of Honour recognizes outstanding achievements in various fields including art, science, medicine, and public service. With only 65 members, including notable figures like Elton John, Paul McCartney, and J.K. Rowling, this appointment elevates Middleton to a distinguished position.

At the same ceremony, King Charles appointed his eldest son, Prince William, as the Great Master of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a position previously held by the king himself during his tenure as the Prince of Wales.

Queen Camilla, the king’s wife, was appointed as Grand Master and First Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, succeeding her late husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Middleton’s appointment is seen as a gesture of support from King Charles, especially as both the monarch and the princess are currently battling cancer. Middleton revealed her diagnosis in a pre-recorded message shared in March, while King Charles’s cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace in February.

Despite their health challenges, King Charles and Middleton maintain a warm relationship. The monarch has always held Middleton in high regard, fondly referring to her as his “beloved daughter-in-law” during public addresses. Their shared affection is evident in their warm exchanges during public engagements.

Author Sally Bedell Smith notes that Middleton’s interests in art and culture have further strengthened her bond with the king. Now, facing a common health struggle, their relationship is expected to deepen even further, serving as a source of comfort and solidarity for both.

King Charles and Middleton’s shared journey through cancer is viewed as a unifying factor, drawing them closer together amidst the challenges they face. Despite their individual battles, they find solace in their mutual understanding and support
