Keven Appo, sacked by Bradford Bulls, escapes to Papua New Guinea amid sexual offence charges

Keven Appo, the 25-year-old rugby league international, has fled the UK following charges of sexual offences, including rape, sparking a manhunt for his return. Appo, who represented Papua New Guinea at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, was sacked by his club, Bradford Bulls, last Friday after the allegations surfaced. He was scheduled to appear at Bradford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, but failed to attend, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant for his immediate capture.

According to court reports, Appo absconded just hours after being granted conditional bail in November. He is said to have flown from Manchester Airport to Dubai, and then on to Papua New Guinea, his home country, within five hours of being charged. The Bradford Telegraph and Argus reported that magistrates were informed of Appo’s swift departure, and an extradition process is now underway.

Prosecutor Fiona Newcombe confirmed in court that Appo had handed over his house and car keys to the club’s manager before fleeing the country. UK authorities are now collaborating with the Papua New Guinea police to bring him back to face the charges.

Appo’s abrupt departure has raised significant concerns, as his actions have placed a cloud over his promising rugby career. His absence from the court hearing has led to further speculation about his motives for fleeing, leaving the authorities determined to ensure he returns to face justice.
