General Francis Ogolla was among the casualties in a helicopter incident in northwest Kenya, prompting a thorough investigation

In a tragic event that has shaken Kenya, General Francis Ogolla, the country’s military chief, along with nine other individuals, was killed in a helicopter crash on Thursday afternoon. The crash occurred in Elgeyo Marakwet County, approximately 400 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, at around 2:20 pm local time (11:20 GMT). The helicopter had just taken off after visiting troops engaged in operations against cattle rustling in the region.

President William Ruto confirmed the deaths at a press conference, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of “one of our most valiant generals.” The incident marks a significant blow to Kenya’s military leadership, as General Ogolla was a prominent figure, having been elevated to the position of military chief last year after serving as the head of the Kenyan Air Force.

The circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear, prompting the deployment of an air force investigative team to the site to determine the cause. This accident adds to a series of air mishaps involving military personnel in Kenya, including a June 2021 incident that resulted in the deaths of ten soldiers near Nairobi.

General Ogolla’s military career was distinguished and multifaceted. Joining the military in 1984, he trained as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force and served as an instructor pilot in the Kenyan Air Force. His promotion to the military’s highest rank last year was not without controversy, as President Ruto had previously implicated him in allegations related to the 2022 presidential election results. Despite these accusations, Ruto had affirmed that Ogolla was the most qualified individual for the chief position.

This loss resonates beyond the military, touching national security and the ongoing efforts to stabilize regions plagued by violence and unrest. The president, along with the nation, mourns a leader whose career was dedicated to service and protection, leaving a legacy that will be remembered amidst this sorrowful time
