Singer and talk show host explains decision amid co-parenting challenges
Kelly Clarkson, renowned singer and talk show host, has disclosed her decision to prohibit her children from using social media until they turn 18. The artist, who co-parents her two children with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, cited the challenges of public scrutiny and the impact on children as the primary reasons behind this parenting choice.
In an interview with People, Clarkson emphasized the difficulty children face, especially those with parents in the public eye, when navigating the online world. She stated, “That can be really hard on kids in general but especially kids with parents in the public eye.” The 41-year-old singer has two children, River Rose (nine) and Remington Alexander (seven), with Blackstock.

She shared an anecdote where her daughter questioned the rule, wondering about the possibility of using social media at her father’s house. Clarkson responded with humor, saying, “Well, you’re there four days a month. Enjoy that.”
While acknowledging that co-parenting has presented significant challenges, Clarkson expressed that both she and Blackstock are currently on the same page regarding the social media rule. Despite the complexities of co-parenting, Clarkson highlighted that over time, the process becomes more manageable. She filed for divorce in 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
As she navigates single motherhood, Clarkson remains focused on maintaining a strong presence in her children’s lives. She recognizes the imperfections of parenting but emphasizes her dedication to doing her best.
