Katy Perry praises Carrie Underwood as she prepares to step down from ‘American Idol’ judging panel
Katy Perry has spoken out about Carrie Underwood stepping in to replace her as a judge on American Idol, offering nothing but praise for the country star.
Underwood, who first rose to fame as the winner of American Idol in 2005, was officially announced as Perry’s replacement in August 2024. The Firework singer had revealed months earlier that the 2024 season would be her last on the show.
Reacting to the news, Perry expressed confidence in Underwood’s ability to guide contestants. “She was born on that show. I think she knows how to steer it,” Perry said. “She actually truly knows what it feels like to be in their shoes. We could only metaphorically feel that as judges.”

Perry highlighted how invaluable Underwood’s experience would be for aspiring singers. “As artists, we’ve been in some sort of their shoes, but she has lived every single day,” she noted. “She’s going to have a lot to offer anyone that’s willing to listen.”
Perry announced her departure from American Idol during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February 2024, explaining her desire to refocus on her music and touring career. “I think this probably will be my last season for Idol,” she said. “I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”
The pop star is now preparing for her highly anticipated Lifetime tour, set to begin in May. While her time on American Idol is coming to an end, Perry made it clear that she is leaving on a high note—and believes the show is in good hands with Underwood.
