The actress makes it clear—her son Ryder won’t have an easy return home after college

Kate Hudson is laying down the law when it comes to her eldest son Ryder’s future. The actress and singer, known for her roles in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and her upcoming Netflix film Running Point, revealed in a recent interview with Bustle that she is making sure her 21-year-old son is fully prepared for life after college.

While speaking about her parenting philosophy, Hudson admitted she can be tough when it comes to her children’s futures. When discussing Ryder’s post-graduation plans, she made it clear that moving back home wouldn’t be a simple fallback option.

“He’s like, ‘I got to figure out what my life is going to look like and how I’m going to achieve the things I want to achieve and how I can live,’” Hudson shared. She emphasised the importance of instilling financial independence early on so that when kids reach adulthood, they aren’t blindsided by real-world responsibilities.

“I think you should be teaching your kids those things way earlier on so that when they get to that point, they’re not like, ‘Oh my god, how do I afford my life and not lean on my family?’” she explained.

Hudson shares Ryder with her ex-husband, musician Chris Robinson. She is also mother to 13-year-old son Bingham, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy, and six-year-old daughter Rani, with her current fiancé, Danny Fujikawa.

As Hudson gears up for the premiere of Running Point on February 27, she is making sure that while her career stays on track, so does her son’s journey into adulthood—without any shortcuts.

Hudson’s parenting approach aligns with her own upbringing, as she was raised by Hollywood icons Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who instilled a strong work ethic in her. She has often spoken about the value of earning one’s success rather than relying on family connections, a lesson she is now passing on to Ryder. By setting clear expectations, she hopes to prepare him for the challenges of adulthood while still offering guidance and support from afar.

Meanwhile, Ryder, who is currently studying at New York University, has expressed his excitement about carving out his own path. While he has occasionally shared glimpses of his college life on social media, he remains focused on his studies and personal growth. With graduation on the horizon, Hudson’s firm stance ensures that he will step into the next phase of his life with a strong sense of independence and responsibility.
