Tattoo artist opens up about 17 sessions of blackout tattooing after embracing Christianity

Renowned tattoo artist Kat Von D, known for her appearances on LA Ink and Miami Ink, has unveiled the staggering amount of time she’s dedicated to the process of blacking out her tattoos. In a recent revelation, Kat shared that she has undergone an extensive transformation, opting to cover up the tattoos that once adorned her body with an entire block of black ink.

Having decided that the tattoos held meanings from a past that no longer resonated with her present self, Kat Von D chose to replace them with a uniform black canvas. In a revealing Instagram post, she disclosed that the process has spanned 17 sessions and accumulated close to 40 hours of tattooing. The remarkable journey, executed by the talented artist @hoode215 at Black Vulture Gallery in Philly, is approximately 80% complete.

In her post, Kat expressed her reasons for the extensive cover-up, citing a desire to shed reminders of a bygone era and embrace a clean slate. She stated, “I had many tattoos that represented a part of my life that no longer aligns with who I am today.” Acknowledging that some people appreciate maintaining these landmarks, Kat shared her preference for waking up to a fresh aesthetic, free from constant reminders of the past.

The ongoing process is not yet concluded, with Kat estimating that around 20% remains. If calculations hold, another 10 hours of tattooing are in store. Noteworthy is Kat Von D’s decision to opt for blackout tattooing over laser removal, explaining that laser removal was not suitable for the extensive coverage she desired.
