Golfers at Heritage Golf and Country Club witness unusual Kangaroo stampede

In a scene reminiscent of a wildlife documentary, golfers at the Heritage Golf and Country Club in Victoria, Australia, were greeted by an unexpected sight: a “fair dinkum stampede” of kangaroos hopping energetically across the course. The encounter, captured by golfer Stephen Roche and shared on X (formerly Twitter), showcased the surprising harmony between Australia’s iconic wildlife and the sport of golf.

Roche, who was playing on the St John’s course, documented the moment when hundreds of kangaroos traversed the fourth hole, marking a first in terms of their numbers at the private club. The sight of the kangaroos, while not uncommon, typically involves smaller groups, making this event particularly noteworthy.

The video, which quickly gathered attention online, featured Roche humorously pleading with the kangaroos not to disturb his golf ball. Despite concerns from viewers about potential damage to the lush fairways and greens, Roche reassured them that the kangaroos left no significant mark, aside from footprints in the bunkers. Their soft-footed nature ensures the course remains largely unaffected by their presence.

Social media reactions varied, with some users joking about the kangaroos’ lack of bunker etiquette and others comparing the spectacle to scenes from blockbuster movies. Questions about whether the kangaroos checked in at the pro shop before their round added a light-hearted twist to the discussion.

Kangaroos are a familiar sight on many Australian golf courses, coexisting peacefully with golfers and often becoming an attraction in their own right. At Anglesea Golf Club, also in Victoria, over 300 Eastern Grey kangaroos reside, feeding on the longer grasses and providing natural fertilizer. The club even offers bus tours to educate visitors about their resident kangaroo population, emphasizing the unique relationship between the animals and the golfing community.

This remarkable interaction highlights the coexistence of wildlife and sports in Australia, where even a simple game of golf can turn into an unforgettable encounter with the country’s cherished marsupials.
