A fatal allergic reaction to a nut-laced dish claims the life of a young mechanic, highlighting the dangers of evolving allergies

In a heart-wrenching incident, Joseph Higginson, a 27-year-old mechanic from Bury, Greater Manchester, lost his life after consuming just one mouthful of a butter chicken curry that triggered a severe allergic reaction. The curry, which contained almonds, was ordered from a local takeaway, and despite being a dish he had previously enjoyed without issue, this time it proved fatal.

Joseph, who was aware of his nut and almond allergy, had been diagnosed with allergies just months before the tragic event. Despite this, he felt confident consuming the dish as he had tolerated it in the past. However, this time, his body reacted differently, leading to a rapid and fatal anaphylactic reaction.

The incident occurred during a family meal on December 28, 2022. After taking a bite of the curry, Joseph immediately felt unwell and collapsed, suffering a cardiac arrest. Despite the swift administration of his EpiPen and emergency medical attention, he sadly passed away in the hospital a few days later.

An inquest into his death revealed that acute anaphylaxis was a contributing factor. The investigation found no fault with the takeaway, as the menu clearly indicated the presence of almonds in the dish. This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of allergies and the importance of taking them seriously at all times.

Joseph’s family has since been raising awareness about the severity of allergies and the potential for a person’s tolerance to change over time. They have also been fundraising for defibrillators and the charity Anaphylaxis UK in his memory. Joseph’s organ donations, as per his wishes, have saved the lives of others, leaving a lasting legacy of hope in the wake of this devastating loss.
