The acclaimed actor, renowned for his iconic roles in Star Wars, The Lion King, and stage classics, passes away at his home in New York.

James Earl Jones, the distinguished actor celebrated for his commanding voice and powerful performances, has died at the age of 93. Jones passed away at his home in Dutchess County, New York. His representatives have not disclosed the cause of death.

Jones is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Darth Vader in the Star Wars saga, a role that cemented his place in cinematic history. Though not the original physical actor for Vader, David Prowse, Jones’s voice work became synonymous with the menacing character. His deep, resonant tones gave life to Vader across six films, including the original trilogy, The Revenge of the Sith (2005), Rogue One (2016), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Jones’s voice was also featured in the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) and the Star Wars: Rebels TV series (2014-2018).

In addition to his Star Wars legacy, Jones was the voice of Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King (1994), a role he reprised in the 2019 remake. His portrayal of Mufasa’s tragic demise in the film remains one of the most poignant moments in animation history.

Jones’s career extended beyond voice work. He made a significant impact on stage and screen. Born in Mississippi in 1931 and raised in Michigan, Jones overcame a stammer in his youth with the help of a dedicated teacher. He began his professional career on Broadway, debuting in 1958 with Sunrise at Campobello. Over the decades, he performed in major productions, including Jean Genet’s The Blacks and Bertolt Brecht’s Baal. His role as Othello in 1964 and again in 1982 remains one of his most acclaimed performances.

Jones won two Tony Awards, the first for his role as boxer Jack Jefferson in The Great White Hope (1967), which was later adapted into a film earning him an Oscar nomination. His film career included notable roles in Dr. Strangelove (1964), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Coming to America (1988), Field of Dreams (1989), and The Hunt for Red October (1990).

Jones continued his stage work with performances in August Wilson’s Fences, for which he won his second Tony Award in 1987, and in the 2010 revival of Driving Miss Daisy. His final stage role was as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (2013), opposite Vanessa Redgrave.

Jones was married twice: to actress and singer Julienne Marie (1968-1972) and to Cecilia Hart (1972-2016). He is survived by his son, Flynn Jones, who is also an actor.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. George Lucas praised Jones as “an incredible actor, a most unique voice both in art and spirit.” Mark Hamill, who portrayed Luke Skywalker, expressed his condolences, saying, “RIP dad.” Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer also shared heartfelt messages, celebrating Jones’s remarkable legacy and influence on the craft.
