Heavy shelling reported as international pressure for a ceasefire grows; UN secretary-general condemns the humanitarian crisis

Israeli forces have intensified their operations in the Gaza Strip, surrounding two more hospitals, Al-Amal Hospital and Nasser Hospital, amid ongoing conflict despite international calls for a ceasefire. The situation has escalated with reports of heavy shelling and gunfire, putting medical teams and civilians in extreme danger. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have also conducted operations at Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, claiming the apprehension of numerous individuals affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and the discovery of weapons within the hospital premises.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with the Gaza Ministry of Health reporting over 32,000 deaths and nearly 75,000 injuries since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7. Israeli forces have been accused of targeting medical facilities under the justification that they harbour militants and weaponry, allegations that have been contested by healthcare professionals and Hamas.

The international community, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, has expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid. However, tensions between Israel and the UN have surged, with Israeli officials criticizing the UN’s stance on the conflict and accusing it of bias.

This situation underscores the profound complexity and tragedy of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to bring about a ceasefire and address the humanitarian catastrophe facing the region’s civilians
