Public beta testers can now experience Apple’s latest features, including AI integrations and a revamped home screen, ahead of the official release

On July 15, 2024, Apple released the first public betas of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, allowing general users to explore the new features introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. This follows three developer betas and includes all the updates from the third developer beta.

Public beta testers enrolled in Apple’s beta program can download the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates by navigating to the Settings app, selecting General, and then Software Update to choose the iOS 18 Public Beta option. It is recommended to install the beta on a secondary device or back up the current system due to potential bugs and performance issues.

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, integrating advanced AI features into the operating system. Although not all functionalities are live in the beta, users can look forward to Writing Tools for text editing, Image Playground for generating custom images, Genmoji for creating personalized emojis, and an overhauled Siri. These features will be available exclusively on iPhone 15 Pro models and M-series iPads.

The update also brings a redesigned Home Screen, allowing users to rearrange app icons and widgets freely. New customization options include a tint option and darker colours for Dark Mode. The revamped Control Center now features a Controls Gallery for personalized settings, multiple pages for grouping related controls, and customizable sizes. Additionally, the Flashlight and Camera icons on the Lock Screen can be replaced, and Control Center options can be configured for the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button.

In the Messages app, users can schedule texts, use any emoji for the Tapback feature, and send messages via satellite. The app also supports text effects and formatting options like bold and italic. For messages with Android users, Apple now supports RCS, ensuring smooth image and file transfers, typing indicators, read receipts, and Wi-Fi texting.

Safari in iOS 18 can summarize webpages and highlight important information at a glance. The Photos app has been revamped to prioritize showcasing the best photos, and a dedicated Passwords app simplifies access to saved passwords and logins. Users can now lock any app using Face ID or Touch ID.

These highlights represent just a fraction of the new features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. For a comprehensive overview, refer to the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 roundups.
