A convicted prisoner managed to overpower escort officers and escape from a prison transport van on the M55 motorway near Preston, prompting a major police search
A major manhunt is underway after a prisoner escapes a transport van on the M55 near junction two by Catforth, Preston, at around 8:54 am on Wednesday.
The fugitive, identified as 33-year-old Jamie Cooper from Blackpool, was being transported alongside other inmates to Lancaster Magistrates’ Court when the vehicle was forced to pull over due to a reported medical emergency. Seizing the unexpected opportunity, Cooper allegedly overpowered the escort officers and fled, disappearing into the surrounding area.
Lancashire Police immediately launched an extensive search operation, urging the public to remain vigilant. Officers described Cooper as 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build, with short-cropped hair. He was last seen wearing a blue coat, blue jeans, and black trainers.
The transport service provider, GEOAmey, confirmed that their vehicle had stopped to address an onboard medical situation when the escape occurred. A spokesperson for the company stated, “During the incident, the detained person overpowered the escort officers and evaded capture. We are cooperating fully with Lancashire Police in their efforts to locate the individual.”
Residents in the Preston and Blackpool areas have been advised to report any sightings of Cooper but not to approach him directly. “We are working at pace to track down Jamie Cooper and bring him back into custody,” a police spokesperson said. “Anyone with information should contact us immediately.”
As the search continues after the prisoner escapes the transport van on the M55, concerns are growing about the security measures in place during prisoner transport. The escape has raised questions about escort protocols and whether stronger safety measures are needed to prevent similar incidents. Authorities have not yet disclosed the charges Cooper was facing at the time of his escape.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
