In the midst of a dangerous storm that coated Portland with ice, 18-year-old Majiah Washington witnessed a horrifying incident outside her home. A red SUV, entangled with a downed power line, became a scene of chaos as her neighbour’s pregnant 21-year-old daughter and her family desperately tried to escape the perilous situation.

The pregnant mother, her boyfriend, and her 15-year-old brother were electrocuted as they struggled with the live wire amidst the icy conditions. Washington, despite witnessing the tragic deaths, sprung into action, calling 911 and rushing to save the couple’s 9-month-old baby.

In a remarkable act of heroism, Washington approached the live wire, maintaining a low crouch to avoid sliding. She managed to grab the baby, who was lying on top of his father. Miraculously, both she and the baby were unharmed by the electrical current that claimed the lives of three family members.

At a news conference held the day after the tragic incident, Washington shared her concern for the baby, emphasising that she was determined to ensure his safety. Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Rick Graves praised Washington’s bravery but admitted confusion over how she and the baby avoided electrocution.

The severe weather conditions in the Pacific Northwest, including snow, freezing rain, ice, and frigid temperatures, have resulted in at least 10 deaths in Oregon, attributed to causes such as hypothermia, falling trees, or utility poles. The weight of ice on trees and power lines has made them susceptible to snapping, particularly in strong winds.

The electrocution tragedy occurred when a large branch broke from a tree, landed on utility wires, and pushed one onto the vehicle where the family sought refuge. The neighbour, Ronald Briggs, confirmed the deaths of his 21-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son but declined further comment. He shared the heartbreaking experience of witnessing his family members slide to their deaths in the icy conditions, leaving him devastated by the loss of two children in a single day.

“It just hurts,” Briggs expressed. “Being a good father cannot solve this right now.” The chilling incident serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of the extreme winter weather gripping the region.
