Robert Temple’s abuse of hypnosis skills leads to jail sentence

In a striking case of digital manipulation, Robert Temple, a 36-year-old stage hypnotist from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, has been sentenced to eight months in prison. Temple admitted to using his knowledge of hypnotism to infiltrate social media accounts, from which he unlawfully downloaded and sold intimate photos of women online.

Temple’s nefarious activities came to light following an investigation sparked by a report to Action Fraud in May 2021. This report detailed an online forum where users anonymously requested explicit photographs of named women. Police traced unauthorized access to several Snapchat accounts back to Temple’s residence, revealing a disturbing misuse of hypnotism beyond the stage.

Employing deceitful tactics, Temple engaged in identity fraud, creating cryptocurrency accounts in unsuspecting individuals’ names to launder the proceeds from his criminal venture. Among the victims was Ellie Norman, 29, from Lincolnshire, who discovered fake profiles set up in her name on various social media platforms. This intrusion into her digital and personal life highlights the broader implications of Temple’s actions, impacting victims far beyond financial loss or privacy invasion.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) emphasized the “insidious tactics” Temple utilized to exploit and victimize women for financial gain. His arrest and conviction serve as a stern reminder that cybercrimes, particularly those that invade personal privacy and security, carry serious legal consequences.

This case also casts a shadow on the ethical use of hypnotism, a topic Temple himself had previously engaged with publicly. Having challenged Bolton Council’s longstanding ban on public hypnotism performances, Temple advocated for regulated and safe hypnotism practices.
