The star rebukes a photographer’s inappropriate request during the high-profile event, demonstrating a stance against sexism

Hannah Waddingham, host of this year’s Olivier Awards, made headlines not only for her role as master of ceremonies but also for a stern interaction with paparazzi. The incident, which quickly became the talk of the evening, occurred when a photographer inappropriately asked her to “show leg”. Waddingham, visibly taken aback by the request, responded sharply, highlighting the sexist nature of the comment. “Oh my God, you’d never say that to a man, my friend,” she retorted, her words capturing the attention of nearby attendees and subsequently, social media users.

The actress, renowned for her roles in “Ted Lasso” and “Game of Thrones”, did not hesitate to address the matter further. She warned the offending photographer, stating that she would not tolerate such remarks. “Don’t say ‘show me leg.’ No,” she insisted, setting a boundary that was met with applause from onlookers. This exchange took place as Waddingham walked the red carpet at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, where the awards ceremony was held.

As she continued to make her way to the venue, Waddingham did not shy away from further admonishing the photographer. Pointing out the lack of manners in his request, she remarked, “Have some manners,” reinforcing her stance against casual sexism in the entertainment industry.

Apart from her decisive handling of the incident, Waddingham also shone in her role as the host of the Oliviers. Returning to the helm after a successful stint the previous year, she treated the audience to a rendition of “Anything Goes”, showcasing her extensive background in musical theatre. Her performance was met with enthusiastic reception, solidifying her status as a beloved figure in both the television and theatre communities.

Her role as Rebecca Welton in the Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” has garnered her several accolades, including an Emmy, a Critics’ Choice Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. This, combined with her past experiences on stage in the West End and on Broadway, and her co-hosting of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, demonstrates Waddingham’s versatile talent and strong presence in the entertainment world
